Please Look After Our Bear …

Paddington Bear has been part of our team at Kew Green Nursery since we opened, spending most of his time with the children and occasionally going home with them for overnight stays followed by breakfast with marmalade. Paddington, the small bear from darkest Peru, is a perfect character not just because of his practical London wet weather gear but because his distinctive personality and values is something all children can recognise, learn from and .

He is always polite and well mannered, addressing others with respect and courtesy using phrases like ‘please’ and ‘thankyou’. Remember when he met the Queen.

He is curious and adventurous about the world and loves to learn new things – whether it is trying out a new hobby or learning about a new country he is open minded, enthusiastic and optimistic.

He also resourceful and determined who, despite his innocence and naivety, finds creative solutions to his problems even if some of them can be a bit unusual. He keeps going with a positive attitude even when baffled by the situation.

He is lovable and affectionate and a loyal friend to the Brown family who took him in when he arrived but also to everyone he meets. He has a strong sense of tradition and duty and always follows rules, even if he doesn’t understand them – priding himself “on being a well brought up bear”. However, he has a strong sense of justice, valuing sharing and generosity, and is not afraid to stand up for what he believes is fair and correcting an wrong.

Families are welcome to take him home for two nights he has an overnight bag and a diary for parents and children to fill in all the things he got up to while he was away from the Nursery. This is a lovely way to foster links between home and school. The children will be invited to share the diary to the whole group with the help of a teacher, enabling them to share their experience with their peers.
