A Thing of Beauty

To celebrate Mother’s Day and raise money for the Small Steps Charity our PTA organised a special Wreathing Workshop.

Small Steps Charity provides specialist development support for young children with physical disabilities. They work in all areas of a child’s development using the principles of Conductive Education. This approach focuses on the positive, based on the belief that children with disabilities can learn new and different ways of approaching everyday tasks through a greater knowledge of their own abilities.

Ancient Egyptians were the first known wreathmakers using natural leaves, and branches. In Europe wreaths were traditionally made in the spring months to celebrate rebirth and fertility and more often worn as headdresses while today’s wreaths now adorn walls, tables and doors adding pops of seasonal colour in our homes.

The workshop was led by talented florist Alice Sym of Posy & Bunch using a mix of pre dried flowers and foliage. She guided us through the structure and steps needed to create individual, beautiful, wreaths which were finished with ribbon. She taught us how to use colour and structure layers effectively in the round. We all left feeling confident of our new skill and were keen to think of different occasions, flowers and reasons to keep wreathing.

The workshop took place in the Prep School Dining Hall as part of the Mother’s Day activities we had planned in the nursery – which concluded with a lunch at The Botanist to celebrate our Mums.
